Saddle Club (Children)

Do you want your child to learn all about horses and ponies, and how to care for them, before you decide to go to the financial expense of buying one?

Would you like your child to brush up on their knowledge to help them better care for the horse or pony they already have?

We are running a classroom-based course of theory lessons, for children aged 6-16 years old.

The aim of these lessons is to teach the students all about horses and ponies, and how to care for them.

We call these lessons the ‘Saddle Club’, so that pupils feel they are involved in something more than just classroom lessons. Pupils are encouraged to work on their own, as part of teams, and to help each other whenever possible.

Our instructors use a number of props (tack, brushes, feed samples etc.) to help the pupils to better understand the information covered in each lesson.

The lessons look at basic horse and pony care, so that when our pupils come into contact with horses or ponies (this may be via a riding school, a friend’s pony, or on owning one themselves), they are fully aware of the level of commitment and work involved with these animals.

Our aim is to ensure that our pupils know of the potential risks and dangers to look out for or avoid, to keep themselves, others, and their horse / pony as safe as possible.

For those pupils who wish to achieve a formal qualification, we offer the British Horse Society (BHS) Horse Owner Exams.

On passing any of the BHS Horse Owner Exams, pupils are awarded a Certificate by the BHS to show that they have achieved the required knowledge for that level.

During the course, pupils sit regular (informal) tests to ensure that they have understood and learnt all the material that has been covered in the lessons.

Handouts are given to the pupils during each lesson, to help them with at-home learning and revision.

We hold competitions and quizzes (free of charge) that the pupils will be encouraged to enter. There are regularly certificates, rosettes and prizes awarded once the results of the competitions and quizzes are known - not just for those who have done the best, but also for those who have tried the hardest, improved the most, and for other worthy efforts.

We hope that children will thoroughly enjoy coming to our “Saddle Club”, and that their thirst for horsey knowledge will grow with each lesson!

Lessons are held once a week, and last for approximately 1 hour.

The cost of each lesson is only £5.00 per person (+ family discounts available).

For students wishing to sit the BHS Horse Owner exams, the cost for each of the four levels is only £40.00 per person per exam.  This includes the cost of the BHS moderation, and the issuing of a BHS Certificate.
